The "Clean Home Delivery Kit" (CHDK) is an inexpensive and easy-to-use set of items assembled to assist mother and birthing assistants in creating a clean and healthy environment while giving birth to a child at home. Almost 2 years of research, initiated by Save the Children Alliance (USA, UK, and Redd Barna) and technical support by PATH (USA), was conducted to evaluate the need of a disposable delivery kit in Nepal. Funded by UNICEF and UNFPA the study focused on the birthing practices and traditions particular to our country. The research was based on the "three cleans" clean hands, clean surface and clean cord care. Need assessment, field trials, prototype development and market testing were all completed during the project period. The results indicated that a delivery kit, which addressed the needs of birthing, assisted and women who give birth unassisted would indeed be a useful intervention in combating maternal and neonatal tetanus and sepsis. Market trials concluded that consumers will be willing and able to afford the purchase of a kit. PATH (USA) & USAID funded to conduct & evaluate the need of disposable delivery kit in Nepal after the three years.

Each Clean Home Delivery Kit (Sutkeri Samagri) contains a clean razor blade for cord cutting, thread to tie cord, plastic circle as a cutting surface, soap for hand wash, a plastic sheet as a birthing surface and a set of self-explanatory pictorial instructions. CHDK contents are the result to research conducted in Nepal by Nepalese research team and reflect the needs of women in our country. Field trials in actual birthing situations resulted in correct usage in over 95% of cases. Women giving birth and those assisting them found the kit convenient, easy to understand and easy to use. There have been no cases of tetanus and sepsis reported. Follow-up research by PATH/USA has shown that the kit's items indeed reduce cases of tetanus and sepsis. MCHP ensures the required quality control procedures have been followed during assembly to every kit at central office at Kathmandu.
